personally i feel like victory road was such a super, super cool concept that isn't executed that poorly outside of three things: 1. it's almost ENTIRELY LUCK BASED finding the dudes in the first place 2. the contesters only occasionally have visual distinction from normal thugs. if i have to find him, why do i have to guess which one is him? 3. the contesters are also somewhat difficult to find, anyway, though there are spawn points

I like yakuza 5 but some of the things you pointed out like having unskipable dialog and the hoops you have to go through to unlock the fighting arena were some of the things that i disliked as well props to you for pointing them out.

The dream segments could have been cool, like imagine if instead of it being a weird detour in the story, the dram segment was just something you had access to at any time as saejima when he was in prison. Where like at any time you could return to his room and dream of the city and it let you have access to like minigames and stuff in the city. Maybe not substories but maybe just let you walk around fight people, so some karaoke and pool when you felt like fucking around in saejimas part

HAHA he finally made the video! Finished watching this the other day. You made a lot of good points in here. Yakuza 5 is certainly a game of all time. I still enjoy it but it's sooo long. I have also got 30 or 40 eps of Fist of the North Star left. Been trying to savor it. Wonder if I will play the Ryu Ga Hokotu cross over or not!

For me y5 is peak, but it's like a movie. I played to do it correctly (from 0 to 7, now IW), but not replay it. It's a crucial part in the story of the games and it's fun but I wouldn't replay it until some years later. Also still mad about the random encounter system, omg.

Don’t see anyone saying this, but Fred Tatasciore is AMAZING as Hamura. I see a lot of people in the Yakuza fanbase who hate on the dubs just for existing, no matter how good they are. Well, I stand by the Judgment dub and the rest of them as golden, especially since we got freaking MEGATRON (that’s what I’ll always remember Tatasciore as) to voice this character.

Imo, LAD Gaiden is the true Yakuza 7 that we deserved

People thought that his craziness is what made him scary, but his serious side is when they realized what fear is. Probably why his men stuck with him for so long. They stayed for that other side of Majima.

Thanks for this. Everything you said resonates with what I've been feeling about the game ever since I completed it. Man, why did they need to make the dialogue such a chore with that "new" style of in-game cutscene? Also, about Akiyama not having a side story, I always thought it would have to do with Elise, but they couldn't come up with anything much different from what they did in Yakuza 4, where you have to scout the hostesses and train them, so they just made that "event" in which you have to reunite all of them in there so the final one may become available.

I just finished yakuza 5 and I thought it was great. Every character felt very fun to play..... except for Shinada. It may be me just sucking at playing him but I felt that he relies on grabs WAY too much and it just made him super unfun to play with. I love grabs and grab heat actions but the fact that any enemy can just slip out of my grabs and block 90% of my hits unless I get behind them. It makes the bosses a slog to get through since you have to get behind them or you aren't going to do ANY damage at all since you cant even do the mediocre meteor tackle since they just break out of it. It seriously sucks that you're forced to use weapons that you HAVE to store in your inventory which takes up space I could be using for healing. Otherwise the game was great.

I love Yakuza 5 and I've played it every Christmas for like 7 years now. I have serious issues with the encounter system and pacing. Both are very bad. The encounter system is so annoying, so oppressive, so overtuned, that it basically destroys free-roam until you get the Beads to avoid it altogether - but I don't want NO combat, I just want it to not be every 15 steps and unavoidable, with a cutscene (HEY WASUP MANG), against 5 damage sponges who call in backup, with long-ass heat actions. The pacing speaks for itself. The length is fine, it's an epic adventure, but the dead stop at the start of each character's section just does NOT work. Y0 fixed both of these completely with the cash-throwing system and the back-and-forth structure, and probably has the strongest pacing in the entire series.

My only problem with Yakuza 5 is how long it is. I remember when I was going through my Yakuza journey, I was able to play from 0 all the way to 4, and when I started 5, I had to take a break a little after I started Shinada's part. And while 5 isn't my favorite, it was an improvement over 3 and 4 and hell, I probably had the unpopular opinion that 5 should've been the end of Kiryu's journey. A very sad and even somber ending to him, but a wake up call on how Kiryu romanticized what being a Yakuza is just to have this life take everything from him, even his life despite wanting to walk away. Regardless, if I had to give 5 a score, I'd say an 8 out of 10.

The weapon revelations make me think that it really should've been something you can do from a low cost upgrade. Especially the ones where you run at enemies with an item, which 0 does, with Beast.

It's not one of my favorites either but it did have an emotional effect on me after I beat it.I really felt a kinship with Shinada for personal reasons and thinking about how certain parts of the story related to my own life got me feeling pretty emotional towards the end. But if I wanted to replay an overly bloated game about a big man with a tie, a cool speedy red guy, a little girl with attitude, an even bigger man with a bigger heart, and an inexplicable 5th guy with a funny face, I'd replay Donkey Kong 64

I'll to this day not understand how they never fixed the random encounters in Yakuza 5. Staring from 1-4 there was never any issues. Then when they made 0, remake 1 and 2, those also never had an issue with random encounters. Then after 5, Yakuza 6, like a dragon and its sequel, didnt have terrible encounter, so why 5 having the worst???
